One of the highlights of the experiences of Dr Kris Rampersad in education, outreach and advocacy for Literature Theatre and the Arts was collaboration with Nobel Laureate Derek Walcott and conceptualisation and coordination of The Year of Derek Walcott.

The Year of Derek Walcott included promotion of Walcott’s musical play, Steel, conceptualising and coordinating the launch of the Derek Walcott/Trinidad Theatre Workshop Fund for Literature, Drama and Film and producing the the star-studded fund-raiser and musical awards ceremony, Evening Epic and producing the CD of Steel.
Enhancing & Incentivising The Arts
The Year of Derek Walcott was the first inclusive commemoration of the Nobel Laureate and one of the most outstanding successes and holistic campaigns that champion the arts, literature and culture in the region. It enhanced the profiles and connected artists to community and culled partnerships in the corporate, political and policy arenas, while also incentivising the arts and culture through development of specialised fund as an incubator for the arts.
Education Outreach Advocacy and the Arts
Dr Kris Rampersad lifted and transformed promotions of the arts by linking education, outreach and advocacy.
Aligned to the production of Steel, as part of a satellite of far-reaching promotional activities, Dr Kris Rampersad proposed and piloted the Derek Walcott/Trinidad Theatre Workshop’s Fund for Literature, Drama and Film.
Dr Kris Rampersad managed the media and promotions of Steel by broadening its outreach while enhancing advocacy for the arts. It also involved building of corporate and other national and international partnerships that saw a high level of sponsorship for the production of Steel and the Year of Derek Walcott.
Steel Derek Walcott and Galt MacDermot
Steel – a musical written by Nobel Laureate Derek Walcott. The music for the play was composed by the legendary Galt MacDermot. The Grammy-winning, Canadian born Galt MacDermot, pioneered musical theatre of the 1960s with his funk/jazz creations.
Evening Epic with Galt MacDermot in the Year of Derek Walcott
Evening Epic is the fund-raising prize-giving award ceremony conceptualised and coordinated by media culture and literary specialist Dr Kris Rampersad. It featured classic selections from Galt MacDermot’s award-winning Hair and Aquarius, sung by members of the cast – the actors and actresses of Derek Walcott’s Steel.
The Fund for Literature, Drama and Film
The Fund for Literature Drama and Film offered prizes to encourage writers and creators of literature – poetry, prose, drama and film. It partnered with the private and corporate sectors with cash awards to encourage creators and producers. It culminated in the star-studded Evening Epic, a fund-raising awards ceremony produced by Dr Kris Rampersad.

The Year of Derek Walcott was such a successful campaign that its impact resonated across the world.
International Impact
Internationally, the promotions and outreach of The Year of Derek Walcott inspired interests and requests for performances and alliances in many parts of the world.
Regional waves
Regionally, The Year of Derek Walcott also created waves. It generated public pressure for St Lucia to better recognise and honour its son of the soil, Derek Walcott. the birthland of Derek Walcott was so inspired to launch its annual Laureate Week that coincided with the birthday of Derek Walcott.
NAPA Movie Towne and the Annual Film Festival
Nationally, in Trinidad and Tobago, the Year of Derek Walcott inspired completion of the National Academy for the Performing Arts as a permanent home and education facility for the arts.
The Year of Derek Walcott also inspired and was the fore-runner of the launch by MovieTowne to develop what is now the Trinidad and Tobago Film Festival. Movie Towne and its founder Derek Chin was one of the patrons and sponsors of the award for short film in the Fund for Literature Drama and Film.
LiTTscapes, LiTTours LiTTributes through Global Landscapes of Fiction
Further, the experiences in developing the Year of Derek Walcott inspired completion of LiTTscapes – Landscapes of Fiction from Trinidad and Tobago and its companion, LiTTours – Journeys Through the Landscapes of Fiction, and global LiTTributes – Tributes to rekindle and restore diasporic engagements that recognise our interconnected global heritage and our common humanity.

The Two Nobel Laureates – Case Story Case Study for MultiMedia & Film
Dr Kris Rampersad is among the few who can claim to have had close-up experiences with the two Caribbean Nobel Laureates for Literature – Sir Vidia Naipaul who received the Nobel Laureate for Literature in 2002, and Derek Walcott who was awarded the Nobel a decade earlier, in 1992. Both are now deceased.
