The new COVID-19 threat is not just a health pandemic but a socio-cultural and economic one as well. It is upturning the way of life of the world, leaving many sectors grasping for foundation.
Futuring, it may mean that many communities may have to turn inwards towards their own knowledge, skills, experiences, tools and resources to meet their needs.
InterGenerational InterConnections
There is a further danger of elders becoming more marginalised and youths more estranged and delinquent from lack of creative holistic and knowledge-building activities; sound mentorship and role modelling.
Technological/Social Gaps
While new technologies as smart phones might have the potential to bring peoples and communities closer together and instantaneously in touch, for the elderly it has also created a bewildering expansion in the intergenerational gap, and socio-cultural distancing and social neglect. Many communities have been fast-losing traditional family community bonds with youths lost in their own-worlds of smart devices, leaving little or no time for connecting with others or the elderly. In this, they are deprived of the shared learnings and experiences of the elderly that came with traditional support family systems. Join the GloCal Post Pandemic Planet Covid Challenge.
Safeguarding Traditional Knowledge
This makes traditional knowledge and practices that reside in the memory of the elderly in danger of being lost if not recorded/captured, especially as they are in the primary danger group for contracting COVID-19 and as many families and youths are not aware or familiar even with personal, familial, community, or societal histories and heritage.
