As Guyana’s Demerara Bridge unfurls across the river in a gleaming arc of steel and spirit, it connects far more than two shores. Here I journey across its physical to its metaphysical value — from the poetry of nation-building l to the ancient crossings of civilization that continue to shape the Caribbean and South America’s place in the world.
A Hypnotic Poetic Potency … The bridge stretches into a golden ribbon over the river’s multispectral tones against a golden sky, binding both shores, embracing the multi-tones, spanning many divides.
Dr Kris Rampersad, When Bridges become EPIC as EPIC Bridges Time, GoldEN Dorado Bridge OILS New Silk Route To East in West in EPIC LAndscapes and Mindscapes of World Heritage & History
The ceremonial ribbon-cutting for the historic opening the Bharat Jagdeo Demerara Bridge drew my attention from creating and crafting my EPIC creative reconstruction of my journeys through Landscapes and Mindscapes of World Heritage and History through Asia’s Silk Routes into our expanding diasporas.
Here before me a live unfolding panorama and spectacle of the interconnections I was illustrating – the emergence of the Global South into its erased and buried primeval splendour, and a people reclaiming their dignity and self esteem long trampled on by others..
Thousands of Guyanese are moving in unison, flocking like flies to fire. Waves of families, elders, schoolchildren, market vendors, farmers, musicians surge onto the shimmering span, drawn to the bridge, a magnetic force. They come to witness and participate in this new chapter of its eternal flow through antiquity and through the Guianas itself, Land of Many Waters.
Poetic Poesy
The scene holds hypnotic poetic potency. The phenomenal flow of excitement, rhythmically rising and falling like the timeless river in motion.
They are accompanied by the infectious fusion of East-West influenced Caribbean drumming and dancing spirits who join invisible ones, collectively summoning the river’s memory. The air itself sways to the heartbeat of nature and the people, resounding the country’s, and the region’s cultural mosaic in chitter-chatter and laughter.
As I put together the parts of my EPIC, my mind’s eye see into the spectacle — framing the connections the bridge would realise – not just in its spatial linking its banks, but opening up a whole trove of latent interconnections that connect peoples to each other and past to future.
Guyana Reshaping the New World Order PetroEconomics
Bridge Across Civilisations
More than the pomp of the ceremonial opening, this is crossing that bears the echoes of my footsteps across diasporas, globe trekking to bridge relations. It conjures up a host of other bridge-crossings across trickling streams that demarcate national boundaries, mighty rivers around which have risen metropoles, and oceans that allow a constant flow and exchange between civilisations.
The bridge stretches like a golden ribbon over the river’s shifting tones beneath a golden sky, binding both shores in a sweeping embrace. With it, the stature of the Guyanese people, rises, lifting pride in their capacity to hold their own in an evolving world.
Dr Kris Ramperad Rebranded Queen of Caribbean Culture under WIPO Tree
A sweep of humanity converges and crosses the bridge, the living heritage of One Guyana reaching as One Caribbean to One World—echoing the Upanishadic ideal Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, the world as one family.
I felt this same current of transformation unfold in real time at the Pravasi Bharatiya gathering, the Maha Kumbh Mela, and their rippling permutations earlier this year. I trace this awakening further—in a westward extension of the Silk Route converges and connects with the Slave and Indentured Indian Immigrant Routes combining our lived realities.
Heritage Educator and Policy Influencer Dr Kris Rampersad Pravasi In Prayagraj at Maha Kumbh Mela, India
It is the vibrant thread that wires my unfolding EPIC Landscapes and Mindscapes of World and History, aimed to spark a different view of our development and place in the world.
Lasting Legacies, Lyrical Aspirations
At the opening of the bridge, President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali matched the moment with words both poetic and philosophical. It was, he said, “not just a crossing, but a catalyst… a gateway and an engine of transformation… to reshape the nation’s destiny.”
EPIC Landscapes & Mindscapes of Heritage & History Guyana Bridge East West Multiculturalism
Among his flagship projects reshaping Guyana’s landscape, he dedicated this bridge to Vice President and former President Bharrat Jagdeo—“because great men deserve recognition, because visionaries deserve legacies, and because Guyana never forgets its giants.”
This recognition of legacies that identifies the value of public service as its value to legacy – rather than self-enrichment, is a breath of fresh air, in a region where the legacy of public works too often echo ambition and corruption. I speak from the experience of Trinidad and Tobago, where in travels abroad, I have been shown towers – even by guides of those countries who draw attention to the embarrassing reality of how our national patrimony was squandered at the cost of our own development.
Even before the launch, standing on the Demerara Bridge in its semi-completion, its lyrical promise swept over me – as must have all who traversed it daily, watching its rise to completion. That is the pride I see in the sweeping waves of humanity converging on the bridge represent.
Spellbinding Moments
Traditions of Divali and Ramleela MultiCultural Faiths, Rituals, Traditions and Heritage Festscapes in LiTTscapes Landscapes of Fiction
Amid the scaffolds of steel and cement and the haze of construction dust, my guide’s voice overflowed with pride and anticipation. His striking blue eyes, set within a dark face weaves his Portuguese and Indian lineage in his physical features. It reflects but a strand of the many threads in the multicultural mosaic of Guyana itself, and indeed the Caribbean and Latin America.
His pride in the bridge, later echoed by President Ali with greater flourish, seemed to resonate with the thousands who flooded the bridge that day—an embodiment of collective optimism and belonging.
EPIC Evidence
Gold Dorado Bridge Oil New Silk Routes To East in West Dr Kris Rampersad EPIC explorations of multidimensional interconnections of Global South
Even before its grand unveiling, the bridge had become a national icon, symbol of a country ascending into a new era of prosperity.
Its roles as a magnet that unites its people into a shared point of identification aligns with my efforts to interlink UNESCO’s Silk, Slave, and Indentured Indian Immigrant Routes—routes too often treated in isolation by bureaucracies still confined within colonial molds.
From visioning, planning and strategy the solutions are skewed and ill-conceived, molded on the modus operandi by entrenched massive bureaucracies. They mirror the dilemma of our smaller regional and national ones, all confined within a particular mindset, reality and mold that established them in a grip of inertia. They lie on a bed of failed and failing programmes and initiatives in which funds are wastefully poured into already damaged processes that render efforts within them futile.
Across small nations, this fragmentation and institutional insularity continue to choke off opportunity and vision.
Means and Metaphor
The new Bharrat Jagdeo Demerara Bridge, therefore, stands not only as a piece of infrastructure to deliver on means, but as metaphor. Physical converges into metaphysical. It reenergises my ongoing call to action that we bridge the divides hewn by history and heal and reverse the resultant inertia and ennui that have set in as second skin.
Witnessing this spontaneous affirmation of a people, embracing a new era in their lived reality in the march of civilisations brings to life what I have been unearthing, tracking and tracing, connecting and comparing the convergences of into our civilisations.
Bridging Silos
Dr Kris Rampersad World Heritage Journey to World Heritage Blue and John Crow Mountains Jamaica
It resonates corresponding vibrations with my ongoing efforts to bridge the silos, span the gaps that exist within global through regional to local development frameworks. In this case, it manifests in my attempts to interlink global and UNESCO’s array of from our resourced perspective – cumbersome processes and unwieldy mechanisms – as those for cultural recognition.
This, admittedly, is but a drop in an ocean of other similar changes and sweeping realignments that must occur for realization and rescue of failing SDGs, mirroring the failed MDGs. It requires reorientation, overhaul and transformation in mindset and modus operandi. That is no small order, so I am breaking it up into bite size, as in this EPIC, Routes and Roots realignment that becomes a blueprint.
Across small nations, this fragmentation and institutional insularity continue to choke off opportunity and vision and is wrapped up in petty antagonisms, biases that manifest as entrenched and perpetuated discrimination and institutionalised bias.
EPIC Landscapes & Mindscapes of World Heritage & History with Dr Kris Rampersad logo
Profoundly Poetic
The elation that surged through the masses gathering from early afternoon for the bridge’s opening was among the most profoundly poetic moments I have witnessed.
The words of William Wordsworth come to mind: Poetry is a spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings.
It resonated with scenes from my experiences across the globe which forms the fabric of my EPIC renderings.
It was succinctly underscored and reinforced in India earlier this year in the Maha Kumbh Mela—where humanity, faith, and movement merged in living spectacle.
The interwoven intricacies and unfolding patterns begin to unravel as I combine experiences, with observations and research from these global intersections of people and cultures. It illuminates ancient routes and modern migrations, crossings that shape how we as people, nations and civilisations meet, and how we may and can reimagine and remake our world.
Opening the Hinterlands
The Demerara Bridge is part of a larger web of highways and roadways now opening up Guyana’s vast hinterland—territories once largely inaccessible and now seen as crucial to national advancement amid newfound wealth. In India, I witnessed how expanded access allows people to reclaim their heritage and history as active participants, reaffirming the essential role of creative heritage sectors in building societies and communities. My EPIC storifies such parallel experiences to illuminate how infrastructure becomes an instrument not just of mobility, but of legacy, meaning and memory, giving flesh to the notion of culture-centred development.
Lived Experiences
On earlier visits to Guyana, the challenge of access was stark. I was astonished at how quickly accessibility vanished beyond Georgetown. To reach sites not far beyond the capital city, I had to switch from jeep to canoe to foot— what we Trinis call the native “P2” experience, short for “private car, 2,” meaning two feet for walking.

Crossing Divides
While it was an adventure for me, for those who live this daily, the romance fades into a test of endurance as these AuthenTHINK Intel insights must admit. Careening down the Berbice by canoe was exhilarating, in parts when it didn’t seem a death-wish (LOL!) yet for residents it underscored a harsher reality—the daily grind of inaccessibility and isolation.
The divides in Guyana are not merely physical or infrastructural; they cut deep into the conceptual and metaphysical.
Physical to Metaphysical Healing
Bridging the physical also means confronting the intangible. Healing, in this sense, becomes multidimensional, linking the material and the spiritual.
Such differences in perspective – between insider, visitor, and outsider – mirror broader dichotomies across our region. The so-called “Zone of Peace,” often idealized in rhetoric, stands in sharp contrast to the lived realities of people on the ground. I’ll return to this in a later reflection, alongside thoughts on this year’s new Nobel Peace Laureate.
These meditations arose in the month of Shakti energy—culminating in that historic award to a woman of our region and leading us now into the Festival of Lights, Divali.
Ramleela celebrations and burning of evil king Ravana precede Divali in open village spaces in Trinidad and Tobago by Dr Kris Rampersad
Multiple Contexts
The Demerara Bridge, then is much more than a than a feat of engineering; it is a monument to aspiration, endurance, and renewal. Like the Silk, Slave, and Indentured Routes it symbolically joins, it tells a story of crossings—of peoples and civilizations, of divisions bridged and destinies reshaped. In its sweep across the Demerara, it connects not only two shores, but also the physical to the metaphysical, the local to the global, the past to the promise of what can yet be built.
