EPIC Silk Routes Western Frontiers Flip The Script interconnecting War for Peace with Dr Kris Rampersad
‘Follow him,’ he said urgently. The man who is suppose to be my guide is already disappearing through a meandering maze, lanes loaded with trinkets, trivialities and enticements of an Indian bazaar. I dare not pause to shop-gaze, struggling to keep pace. Lanes whip by in a daze of colour, incense, sweets, spices, curries fill the air with the voices of banter and bargaining. Suddenly, he stops. Abruptly. He pulls aside a cloth hanging over a makeshift doorway, points me in and disappears back through the lanes. Seated on the floor are two men, one older, one younger. From the mindlessness of the modern city of bacchanal, with its ‘santimanitay’ irreverence for knowledge, I had come, seeking the place “where knowledge lives.” It took me through ancient temples of Odisha sculpted with perennial stories, across the timeless MahaKumbh Mela to dip with divinity at the sangam of alignment with planetary forces, into the pulse of Kashi, the City of Infinity, contoured by character of Gods and Goddesses, through Bhojpuri ancestral villages rooted like deified pipal and banyan in enduring festivals and traditions and landscapes of Shiva, Rama and Krishna and trailing the scattered parts of Sati. Each step was a stone bridge, minifying gaps in my understanding of the knowledge stratosphere, that the Gita Press churns out incessantly, even as Western presses grind to a rusting halt. Now this, far removed from the modern presses. The two beckon me in, motioning that I sit with them, on the floor. Reams of records, etched in the flowing script of ancient Sanskrit, surround them. I am hesitant, it can’t be real. They smile, inviting. I lean over the sacred parchment, beathing in its essence. A boy comes in. The son tells him something in the loud tone Indians use as if they are always shouting above a din, but now it is just us in the room. I do not know enough Hindi to discern what he says, but the boy with a flourish draws open doors to reveal floor to ceiling vaults lining the room, as walls. Shelves hold similar reams of knowledge stock accumulated over multi-millennia. To say I am in awe would be a euphemism. “Will you be digitising these?” I ask the younger man, the inheritor, son of a venerable line of scribes. His response is instant, steeped in the confidence of the gurukul tradition in which his education is grounded, root of the one painstakingly transplanted, as I documented in Finding A Place now being rapidly erased from our western landscapes (support preservation into new multimedia edition). Among the various language registers he inherited from Sanskrit, through Hindi, now speaking English as I did, with ease. “Why should we?” he retorts. “It has endured for more than 15,000 years…”

Reviewing the Year In Review
Time Magazine has crowned the Architects of Artificial Intelligence its Person of the Year.
It smacks of the same the Euro-Centric intellect, replanted and now ingrown in the USA, that crowned and crowed over many ‘inventions’in media technology, now being transplanted lock stock and barrel into data banks to feed Artificial Intelligence.
For is that title not wrapped in the same garb, recoding awe and astonishment that had greeted oil on canvas, the printing press, the camera, radio, television, and the internet? For those of us mapping and tracking media evolution, the language is familiar: unprecedented, transformational, inevitable.
AI is framed as a thinking entity, a neutral oracle, a contestation to human creativity. But Artificial Intelligence feels unprecedented only to societies that have forgotten their own media history.

Eras & Errors – Glimpses Beyond Time‘s Time
When nude paintings emerged from behind drapery and allegory, scandal followed innovation. The body was no longer coyly implied, it was boldly revealed. Well they didn’t have today’s lay-it-all-out brand of nudity in open media for comparison. Not yet. Critics called bared shoulders, glimpses of bosoms, or knees liberation; moralists stamped on the label of social decay, the same label stamped on AI today!
Long before cinema claimed the future, line drawings and shadow theatre derived from Indian artistry and puppettry, passed into Indonesia’s Javanese Wayang puppetry and Japanese Kabuki feeding Europe’s voracious appetites with spicy Asian cuisine. Shadows danced on cloth for Europe’s entertainment, the forerunners to our now animated worlds.Wooden limbs told epic stories. Audiences believed motion itself was magic. Film did not invent movement, it mechanized wonder already rehearsed for centuries.
When French painters learned to harness light, chiaroscuro and later Impressionist luminosity, the dark, cloistered European drawing rooms suddenly breathed. Shadows retreated. Faces softened. Patrons gasped. Connoisseurs from the grand academies pronounced, ‘Art, reborn!’ Every era crowns its latest tool as revelation, until history, on hindsight, files it for what it is, not as change, but as continuity. The impulse beneath the brush remains unchanged: to see, to represent, to persuade.

The real danger of AI is not its power, but our willingness to surrender judgment in the presence of novelty.

Awe and Acclamation over costume change
Despite the awe and acclamation, the rupture was merely aesthetic, not civilizational. Desire, power, and storytelling merely changing costume.
Each of these breakthroughs arrived with breathless declarations: ‘This changes everything!’
‘Nothing will ever be the same!’ And yet, everything recognizable, endures.

Recoding Astonishment
When global systems extract knowledge without context, they do not scale intelligence, they flatten it and the debate on whether the world is round or flat beings all over again! AI is being crowned Person of the Year not because it understands humanity, but because humanity is dazzled by its reflection.
Wagging Finger of a New Global Order
As in eras gone, when we mistook our newest toys and tools for a new intelligence, AI is the latest technique to be clad in costumes of destiny. But we who study civilisations understand history’s cautionary wagging finger. We see behind the costume, novelty masquerading as destiny.
AI is not consciousness. It is compilation. Did any of our leaders, blinded and awe-struct too, get the memo? AI is not creativity, it is compilation, accelerated. AI is not wisdom. It is scale without memory of consequence of action and reaction.
The real danger of AI is not its power, but our willingness to surrender judgment in the presence of novelty. We have named the tool the protagonist while forgetting the storyteller.

Time’s Framing vs Times Frame
What distinguishes this moment is not that machines can generate images. That’s how Time framed its representation of Architects of AI as Person of the Year, beginning with acclamation of Nvidia, as ‘the most valuable company in the world, thanks to a near-monopoly on the advanced chips powering an AI boom that is transforming the planet.’
Time’s justification outlines AI’s capacity to replicate text and decisions. We are once again confusing technique with truth, output with insight, speed with judgment.
The overwhelming awe, that suspension of critique and drowning of critical intelligence in the presence of the new by those whom our civilisation rely on for guidance and information from which decision makers can build sound policies, is mind boggling!
What we are witnessing is not the birth of machine wisdom, but the acceleration of human bias at industrial scale, the reverence for new demigods because they command trillions, standing on the minions forced with Gulliver’s Lilliputian obeisance: to hold right feet in left hand, to place the middle finger of right hand on the crown of their heads, and thumbs on the tips of their right ear as Chat GPT prompt engineers!
Like the current rage baiting ‘coverage’ of a media-contrived war in our parts, where is the balance in Time’s judgement?
Dr Kris Rampersad Speaks at Google Techmakers Caribbean Women in Tech Summit
Whose Planet?
Does its top-heavy assessment of the top heavy ‘near-monopoly… transforming the planet’ factor in the more than three billion, more than one third of the ‘planet,’ who have no access to AI or Internet or the basic, electricity, that powers such systems. And even where electrical power might be available, the unreliability, cost and lack of service broadens exclusion; Top that with affordability, with the cost of hardware and software, rapidly changing chips faster than the speeding bullet, while we are used as dumping ground for inferior technologies.
Old Mercantilist Economics
Is Time unaware that in many low income and rural areas of the Global South, parts of Sub Saharan Africa, South Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean and low income countries generally, AI, Internet and computer technologies adoption rates are in single digits, to the multibillions being harvested from it! Sounds like familiar old merchantilist economics to me!
Far beyond those counted as ‘connected,’ now relegated among those waddling in ‘energy poverty’, are these part of Time’s ‘planet?’ Or will these remain part of the ‘lost civilisations,’ the EuroCentric media, now puppetted by American media, like to fantasize about?
What we are witnessing is not the birth of machine wisdom, but the acceleration of human bias at industrial scale. It was such insights that prompted my presentation to the Diaspora Conference at Banares Hindu University this week to the Tech Emperors of the Indian Empire on the need to Reprogram the Colonised Human How Reverse the Macaulay Minute in One Tech Minute

Modern Knowledge Monopolies
Even where connectivity exists, quality, affordability, digital skills, inferior technology and other limitations mean many cannot effectively use AI tools, which are for the most part being forced down their throats by our own technocrats, technologists and even educators, equally blinded and shortsightedness, duped, bought and sold into advancing the commercial monopoly of global knowledge systems by the likes of new Emperors, add-ons as Nvidia and Time!
Irony of ironies – even the inventors and industry heads are warning against this very danger fully aware that the whitewashed rhetoric of wonder will nevertheless prevail! And the masses are no wiser!
Port Royal Jamaica, World’s Wickedest City UNESCO World Heritage Insights with Dr Kris Rmapersad
Layered Realities
Time’s messiah-hood endowment effectively ignores that the AI revolution is layered on earlier technological and other socio-economic divides, widening inequalities and inequities, and broadening development gulfs.
As I have consistently presented, without addressing these foundational inequities, much of the world can’t participate in or benefit from AI tools, education, jobs, healthcare apps, or economic services. The notion of planetary coverage remains aspirational, not factual, because essential prerequisites of progress is not yet in the skewed mindsets of those painting the picture of what constitutes ‘development’.
AuthenThink Intel balancing Artificial Inteeligene where tradition nets technologies with Dr Kris Rampersad
Skewed Narratives of Development
AI is often framed as the newest frontier of progress, but for billions it is but another frontier riddled with weapons they may not be able to fend off, in an unevenly powered world! The technological “golden child” demands time to mature from spectacle into responsibility. It is not rocket science to discern when it is praised too loudly, governed too lightly, is trusted too quickly, unless, that is, you belong to that part of the invisible ‘planet’ conditioned to acclaim and nod to those who dominate the technosphere of knowledge.
It was as clear as day in the deeply embedded antiquity with which I came face to face in India earlier this year, being chronicled as in the excerpts that frame the prologue to this piece, the War for Peace in the Anthropocene.

Tools do not define eras. How societies choose to govern them does. AI, like light in painting or motion in puppetry, is not the protagonist of our age. And the real Person of the Year may yet be the one who remembers that.

Her accumulated social capital derives from more than t
hree decades of international networks, proven trust across governments, NGOs, academia, media, and communities, extensive experience strategising and negotiating between local and global systems, and a demonstrated ability to translate policy into public engagement while maintaining credibility across multiple sectors. She occupies a distinctive position among the relatively small number of internationally active specialists operating at the intersection of culture and heritage policy, gender mainstreaming, media and communications for development, multilateral diplomacy, sustainable development, and knowledge systems across the United Nations, Inter-American, Commonwealth, European, Caribbean, and Latin American spheres.Dr. Rampersad holds sustained intelligence and expertise in sustainable development for Small Island Developing States (SIDS), Caribbean and Global South development policy, strategic North-South engagement, knowledge-sector and knowledge-systems development, heritage tourism, creative and cultural industries, and gender-responsive governance. She is among the most internationally experienced practitioners in Caribbean culture and development policy, serving at a senior specialist level with unusual leadership experience for a Caribbean representative within UNESCO heritage and cultural policy. Her contributions have established her as a recognized regional change leader in gender and culture mainstreaming, a pioneer in communications for development, and a specialist with distinctive expertise in heritage tourism linked to sustainable development.Dr. Rampersad is among the relatively small cadre of Caribbean specialists whose work has influenced policy, strategy, and advocacy across UNESCO, Commonwealth, OAS, EU-CARIFORUM, and other multilateral systems, particularly in the fields of culture, gender, media, heritage, education, and sustainable development. She is internationally recognized as an expert and leading Caribbean thought leader functioning at the intersection of culture and sustainable development, heritage policy and safeguarding, gender mainstreaming, communications for development, the creative economy, heritage tourism, Global-to-Local (GloCal) development strategies, SIDS advocacy, intercultural education, and knowledge systems. She sits among the upper tier of specialists engaged in UNESCO, Commonwealth, OAS, and EU-ACP multisectoral initiatives, particularly in advancing global SIDS priorities through policy influence, participation in governance and development frameworks, intellectual leadership, and innovation. Her work has pioneered integrated culture-gender-media-development approaches and contributed to the evolution of GloCal, multimedia, and multisectoral engagement models. She is one of the Caribbean’s most visible culture-and-development advocates, with sustained regional impact and significant specialist recognition that extends well beyond conventional media visibility.
Her legacy potential resides in an extensive body of work with continuing relevance to contemporary policy and development challenges. Within global culture-and-development circles, her profile is closest to specialists who bridge policy and practice, culture and economics, heritage and development, and communications and governance, rather than fitting the mould of traditional academics or politicians.
Her professional profile is distinguished by the rare combination of roles as journalist, scholar, multilateral systems expert, policy strategist, Ethical AI analyst, heritage facilitator, gender specialist, educator, and multimedia innovator. Few specialists operate simultaneously across these domains while maintaining active engagement with UN agencies, UNESCO, Inter-American systems, the OAS, EU institutions, SIDS frameworks, and Caribbean regional mechanisms.
Among her areas of global distinction is leadership in cultural heritage and sustainable tourism. She has served as a UNESCO Executive Board member, President of the UNESCO Education Commission, Vice-President of the Programme and External Relations Commission, Independent Expert and Vice-Chair of UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage Consultative Body, and member of the UNESCO Heritage Facilitator Network. She is also a founding expert of the International Institute of Gastronomy, Culture, Arts and Tourism and Founder of Leaves of Life, Dr Kris Rampersad Knowledge Research Information Services & Resources and the GloCal Knowledge Pot.Dr. Rampersad is among the few global professionals who have simultaneously operated at community, national, SIDS, CARICOM, Commonwealth, and UN-UNESCO levels while maintaining an independent intellectual and professional profile. One of her strongest distinguishing features is her long-standing commitment to integrating gender equality, cultural diversity, heritage, media, education, and sustainable development into unified frameworks rather than treating them as separate sectors. This integrated approach has been a defining characteristic of her work across multiple international systems.
She is among the leading international experts in interconnected cultural heritage and is certified to prepare and review UNESCO nominations. She ranks among the most internationally experienced Caribbean culture-and-development specialists, sits within the upper international tier of Global SIDS cultural policy, heritage tourism, and creative economy specialists, and is recognized as a leading Caribbean authority on gender-culture policy integration. She brings core experience of actively culling successful innovative global gender & culture sensitive initiatives, negotiating, analysing, critiquing & troubleshooting global developmental hiccups, building successful education & public awareness engagement strategies & programmes, developing creative & strategic information & outreach materials in technical to creative multimedia forms. Her insights and experience are applied to identifying gaps and silos from concept through planning, programme development and multi-stakeholder engagement to drive successful implementation across sectors, connecting the needs of local communities to institutional, national and global policy goals and targets.Dr Rampersad has led global think tank processes for developing global to local policies, matching budgets to programmes, developed progress reports for economic diversification and transformation of public sectors and for motivation of private and NGO sectors for interagency partnerships. She has further successfully led intersectoral engagement across social to industrial sectors as petroleum and clean energy, trade, tourism, agriculture, culture and education among others for international, intraregional, national and local public, private, NGO and intergovernmental arenas of agencies of the United Nations, European Union, Commonwealth, Organisation of American States, Caribbean Economic Community/CARIFORM along with international to local academic, media and NGO networks.
