The story of Ma is a simple one that matches her own simplicity. One does not have to be in the limelight with millions of followers to be an inspiration and Impact the World. It is a message that is pertinent to girls and women of today caught in social media syndrome that imposes a sense of inadequacy from the pressures for social media followings. Our mothers generally relegated to invisibility by social forces did not let that stop them! Here are examples of How Ma inspired the global village from her confines to the village!
Ma’s invisibility to the wider world did not make her insignificant, nor any less of a giant Mothers are the bedrock from which are launched our ambitions and our raison d’ etre/reason for being.

A Branch, A Breath of Ma
In the last few months of Ma, I lay beside her while she slept. She was aging and frail and yet, she, her breath was the source of resuscitation for me, trying to ward off the the world and its disillusionments as her lungs was the source of sustenance when I was in her womb.
It was in the early days of the Pandemic as the world was fighting for its own breath, grasping to understand an unknown rapidly spreading infection, shutting off its accustomed life support – the seas, nature parks, each other.
As I exchanged breaths with her, I felt a return to a more primordial interchange. It was her lungs that kept me vital and bouyant before birth, the substitute for my heart’s arteries that were taking on a rare formation all of their own, a secret they would seclude until it was almost too late. Without that vital connection, breathing with her lungs, I might not have been. But that too I only discovered that almost too late – it is the story of my unfolding Biography Life! HoleHeartedly!
One Night To Bloom: Muse of the MultiMedia MicroEpic
The process of creation itself illuminates and enlightens experience. That is what happened when I was asked by the Commonwealth Scholars Association to develop a video bio profile for its International Women’s Day/Commonwealth Day Forum. I had no idea that it would blossom into what it now is, the world’s newest creative genre, the MultiMedia MicroEpic.
As Ma in her closing months filled my days, the meaning of her filled my imagination. I made the simple bio profile carry the weight of not just my own life story but also of my life’s creator whose roles, much more intangible than tangible, grew to universal stature as I was developing The Multimedia MicroEpic Biopic, conceived and completed during the initial months of the COVID Pandemic as I devoted time to caring for her as her health deteriorated. Ironically, if the world was not on lockdown, I might have been attending the forum in person and would have not have had the time with Ma to produce the piece it became. My presentation would have been something else entirely based on the topic that is also written in creative couplets and yet to be released, Globalisation In Reverse!
In this seven minute biopic that became my main presentation on the request of the British Council and organisers of Commonwealth Scholars’ Forum, Ma is the muse and guiding force in my life’s path in One Night To Bloom. Moving Force of MotherContinent
Ma is also the inspiration of the larger work in progress, in the genre of the Multimedia MicroEpic – MotherContinent where the character of village women from first peoples to later colonial andp ost colonial migrants. She and the First people women of our region infuse and bellow out into and embody the global landscapes and seascapes of how history and heritage to negate the short colonial interlude that occupies our contemporary existence. More than where she appears as a person, a voice, a song, a strain of melody, the propensity to be larger than our physical selves is what permeates the texture of Mother Continent. Inspiration for Women Agents of Change Initiative
Ma inspired the Commonwealth Caribbean Women Agents of Change initiative that has since fed back into the global system and is inspiring recognitions for women agents of change everywhere.
Within the process of preparing Commonwealth civil society to engage with and access new media for Commonwealth Women’s Affairs Ministers meetings and Commonwealth People’s Forum, as the Director of Lobby and Advocacy I devised the Commonwealth Women of Change initiative. it was piloted through the Commonwealth Women’s Network, Caribbean Women in Leadership and Network of NGOs for the Advancement of Women where I served as Director for Education Outreach and Advocacy.
The event networked Commonwealth women Leaders and organisations in a symposium hosted in Trinidad and Tobago under the patronage of the first Woman Prime Minister, who is the subject of my book Through the Political Glass Ceiling (Make contact to order copies)!
One of the elements was the Women Agents of Change Awards which inspired the introduction of the National Award for the Development of Women. I developed and pitched the award with the Network based on my understanding of how women like Ma are pillars of invisible and unrecognised strength of our societies. Persons were invited to submit nominations of women who inspire them!
On her passing, the new recall her impact, in inspiring the global change initiative that has now become a global movement, identifying women agents of change.

Maharani Pranks the Monarchy
The light and teasing tone of Her Majesty Meets The Maharani, in the wake of the death of Queen Elizabeth II, disguises the void and grief, still raw from Ma’s passing. I envision her encountering Queen Elizabeth in the afterlife and having her pitch for equality at the monarchy.
In the world of creation, these verses with a chutney soca twang pits Ma as the labelled illiterate (in English) Matriarch and Maharani against Her Majesty the Matriarch of the British Empire in a Commonwealth Game of Queen and Mouse. Drawing its tone from the British nursery rhyme Pussy Cat Pussy Cat , its twang is all Trini chutney music, a genre to which her folk renditions helped to develop.

What My Mother Told Me, Wealth Is Your Mind is one of the pearls of wisdom that poured forth from her to assuage my disillusionment and heal my spirit still in the raw as i also recovered from the life-altering surgery. Her perspectives, always fresh, never failed to startle with their surprising spark.
Advocacy for Gender Equality
Indeed, my work in advocacy for gender equality and opportunities for women and girls spring from the deprivation of opportunities Ma faced and her struggles to make open up avenues for me to access these, through education.
