The United States of America goes to the polls at this time when there are unprecedented and unpresidented (lol!) tectonic global shifts, not just in the climate, but of the global status quo itself.
To much of the world looking on, it appears as if the USA is enarmoured of its own Hollywood-tinted and tainted historical place in world politics, and somewhat oblivious to this reality. And with the clock ticking with long-ignored nations and new emerging world powers, it may not have the luxury of time to continue to ignore the challengers at its door.
Seismic upheavals occuring in world economic, as political and cultural reconfigurations, demand that the USA recognise and act, to repair its global image. How it emerges from this election will determine its place, and value, to the emerging new world order sweeping in tsunami waves across the globe in the aftermath of the Pandemic.
The USA’s national campaign focus has been understandably on the myriad domestic issues that confront the country including its economy, the diversity elements that swirl around its handling of migration, drugs and guns trade that it produces and which seep into and out of its borders, escalating its role in an increasingly violent world.
As they spill over borders, these issues are also of keen interest to the onlooking international community, also confronting turbulence of the global economic, political, social and cultural order. This makes 2024 a pivotal election that will determine and indicate the USA’s continued place and role in not just our region, the Americas, but too, the globe. Leadership Matters.
From BiPolar to MultiPolar
Pivotal to this election – to the USA as to the global onlookers – is therefore not just its economic and financial management, which are of major significance in themselves as it is no secret that the prosperity of the US spills out into the world in myriad ways. The more esoteric, endemic and intangible factors is the USA’s confrontation with self – in assessing its own value for and of the evolving character of democracy from bipolar to multi-polar contexts and appreciation for diversity that will impact its future role in changing global dynamics towards a new world order.
The sharper and sharpened focus on these ‘intangible’ factors in the USA elections has direct correlation to the emergence of a woman as a candidate in this election and on this I will address in greater detail throughout this AuthenThink Intel AnalyEthics. (Support ongoing research, case study development and publication, and shared findings and conclusions through Demokrissy posts.)
Authenticity vs Fakism
There is clearly a more sharply emerging focus on the often-overlooked basic value of authenticity which adds an interesting new dimension to the politics of today, encapsulated in the augmented reality of AI’s contrived intelligence and buoyed by new media technologies, which would also be closely scrutinised by this AuthenThink Intel AnalyEthics study.
When the USA Sneezes
It is no secret that in the face of the emergence of new more potent intangible factors that drive progress and evolution, the USA’s place and role, as has the USA’s command of respect in the international arena, is being challenged by rapid reconfiguration of the global balance of power across the spheres of economics, politics, culture, environment, energy and other traditionally-defined factors of development.
The next leader’s ability to appreciate these unfolding dynamics would help the USA redefine its ability to more effectively respond beyond knee-jerk reactionary adherence to old realities and responses that have traditionally favoured war-mongering as quick-fix distraction from national challenges as it simultaneously escalate global tensions and regress peace efforts.
Responsible responsiveness is a path that would not escalate, but control and minimize global tensions, many of which are themselves essentially rooted in replicated historical preconditioning advanced and entrenched into the global psyche by the USA’s historical modus operandi.
Evolving New World Order
Dynamic readjustments to the new emerging global status quo and evolving world order, flexibility in facilitating traditionally excluded countries an equal place at the decision-making table and respect and value for the independence of post-colonial countries that, like the USA, have since come into their own are foremost in a dynamic new transformative global agenda.
Admittedly, these are changes that international watchdog bodies embedded within the North-centric UN and other systems are also yet to fully confront and address. Themselves deeply rooted in fast-fading bipolar post-cold war dynamics that, outside of Hollywood (ahem!) are now proving to be increasingly irrelevant to the evolving multipolar world, these global institutions also have much advances to make to bridge the gaps as silos of development. From the Caribbean, the voice of Barbados’ Prime Minister Mia Mottley has been strident in urging for immediate and direct implementation of preferred solutions.
Global Institutional Reform
Case in point are renewed calls for long overdue reform of the UN Security Council tabled by such leaders as President of Guyana Dr Irfaan Ali who recently held chairmanship of the council as a temporary member against established permanent seats that favour old-world powers – a practice that reeks of the global imbalances that permeate other UN agencies and arenas.
As the US has restored its membership in the UN bodies, taking a place in advancing rather than regressing the conversations and actions for transformation will also signal whether it is an ally of the new global order or a disruptive spoke in the wheel of equitable development.
Leadership Matters in War and Peace
With wars erupting in several fronts, in which, for the most parts the US is not an innocent, nor distinterested party, the elections would also determine the US role in upholding international law, more inclusive conflict-resolution and evolution of peace-building processes and mechanism that could restore credibility and confidence in international peace and security.
Adjusting Monoculturalism to Multiculturalism
You might have noticed that I am careful to retrieve the acronym America as a synonym for the USA. In a world gripped with righting inaccuracies in labels of identity, that the USA is just a fraction of the Americas, not its sum-total, is one preconditioned monocultural notion that requires readjustment. No matter how vehemently the USA sneezes, virally spreading its cold, flu and pandemic ailments across borders, it is not the whole shebang of the Americas that is our Hemisphere, struggling to assert and affirm its myriad identities in a panoramic cultural mosaic.
Migration, Heritage, Culture & Gender
The world’s growing diversity sets diversity at the top of the global agenda. The ability of the USA to appreciate and accommodate that diversity comes sharply into focus as many of the tensions that result in war stem from lack of appreciation of diversity – of people, of history, of heritage.
Context of the US elections and the Caribbean and Latin American and global contexts, including the intersection of gender and cultural identity that have surfaced with renewed vigour owing to the identity and roots of its presidential candidate Kamala Harris’ as well as in the context of the raging migration and border issues I treat with later in this AuthenThink Intel study on which I will elaborate, further in subsequent posts.
Power Diffusion through Infusion
To sustain its influence, the USA must adapt to a global landscape where power is no longer concentrated but distributed, where authentic engagement and equitable partnerships are essential for progress, and where a country’s moral and ethical consistency is as crucial as its military or economic strength. Embracing this shift in perspective would enable the USA to redefine its role not as an isolated hegemon but as an integrated, empathetic leader in a cooperative, multilateral world order.
What is A Woman? Why Put A Woman
Did you believe there was a new wave, a new sense of awakening and injection of a new spirit of dynamism in the US Election race when Joe Biden stepped aside and endorsed his Vice President Kamala Harris as the candidate for the Presidency? What exactly were these breezes of change, in which direction are they blowing and what are the implications for the USA, for the Globe, and are they strong enough to turn the tide of governance?
From three decades of interrogation and analyses of the roles of gender, culture, rural and other intangible and invisible factors in evolution of social and political dynamics, I draw attention to these observances on trends in the US General elections, uncaptured by the existing political pundits and pollsters.
