As a teenager Ma had the name of Ram tattooed on her arm. Today, her soul will be released in the cremation fire – the mukhagni ceremony – to chants of Ram Naam Satya Hai – The Name of Ram is Truth.
Ma will take her final journey to the Shore of Peace, Mosquito Creek, La Romaine where she will be cremated according to Hindu rites. The ceremony will begin at 8 am.

Hindu Cremations
Cremation is the final of a series of rites and rituals known as Samskaras that begin from conception and continues through schooling, marriage and death
Cremation culminates the soul’s mortal journey. The body is offered to the flames for the final release of the soul in the last rites/Samskaras called Shraddha. Cremation rites or Antyeshti, that include dressing the body and ritual consecration until it is consumed by flames will begin at 8 am.
Hindu Cremations in Trinidad and Tobago
Although Hinduism has existed in Trinidad since the arrival of Indentured Indian Immigrants, Hindu Cremations in Trinidad and Tobago only began with Independence from colonial rule. Prior to this as with many other cultural traditions of migrant Indians, Africans and Chinese, cremations were banned.
With the outbreak of Covid-19, cremations were again banned, but following protests and advocacy, is now being partially allowed, with restrictions.
The Shore of Peace
The Shore of Peace at the mouth of thee Godineau River is one of five open air cremation sites in Trinidad and Tobago.
Other cremation sites are at the Caroni River, the Felicity River, Waterloo Cremation and Mafeking in Rio Claro.
