Spread the love
Congrats to Oliver Chapman on his national award and thanks for the songs of inspiration, especially this one, written specifically for the Cross Country. The National Awards citation mentions his rendition of ‘Old Man River’ and his collaborations with calypsonians but not this significant piece of work.
Creative Collaborations
Artists feed each other’s creative imagination and build and support each other through outstanding collaborations. This is one of the source of inspiration for the integrated approach to education in my offerings through the GloCal Knowledge Pot and elsewhere that shares a holistic vision that combine media, culture, education and gender sensitivity into developmental thrusts.
In so many ways it became this Cross Country theme song, Footloose and Fancy Free, became the song track of my life, literally and figuratively. As such, Oliver generously offered it to me for the song track of One Night To Bloom, the debut biopic in the new creative genre, the MultiMedia MicroEpic. It also features in the developing sequel, MotherContinent – that taps into unexplored elements and dimensions of our interconnected global heritage.
Inspired Series
This, along with my award winning newspaper column series, Discover Trinidad and Tobago – from which AVM’s Dale Kolasingh lured me to write Cross Country – also inspired subsequent newspaper series as Environment Friendly – the pioneer reporting from the Caribbean on sustainable development and issues of small island developing states.
Along with another programme I wrote for AVM Television, BookTalk, it also fed and finds some representation through the scenes and experiences presented and described in LiTTscapes – Landscapes of Fiction.
Cross Country Heritage
Cross Country was an anthropological magazine-styled weekly television series I wrote for AVM Television. While I conceptualised, researched and wrote many of the initial segments over the first years, it was narrated by actor Ralph Maraj, seen in the intro segment, who later became a politician!
Prime Time command
the award winning Cross Country was the only local programme that ever commanded top viewership on local prime time TV. It was produced by Dale Kolasingh who founded AVM Television. The anthropological series captures and represents so many aspects of national life, cultures, villages, districts, people, festivals, beliefs – some of which are fading and disappearing. It was such a novel experience entering the social and cultural and ecological life of our islands at their source.
It’s a pity that much of the programmes and footage may be in need of rescue as do so much of our audio visual heritage. I would welcome getting copies to retrieve and restore and place in context as a unique body of work of our socio-cultural heritage.
While inspiring so many others, these experiences provided inspiration and background experience and research material for my doctoral thesis since published as Finding A Place and which I am now in process of converting into multimedia for blended learning. Thank you for the music, and the inspiration, Oliver Chapman!
