As LiTTscapes – Landscapes of Fiction embarks on its celebrations of its 10th Anniversary, Google today celebrates the steelpan with a google doodle. The steelpan features as FesTTscapes in LiTTscapes and in our global LiTTributes that connect crucial development issues with Caribbean creativity and heritage through edutainment.

Global Woman TechMakers’ and Google Digital Skills Ambassador
It also comes as I announce my anointment as a global Woman Techmakers’ Ambassador and Google Applied Digital Skills Ambassador aimed at bridging the digital divide and enhancing the value and visibility of the contributions of under-represented women in technology and the digital arts.
Taking the Lead in InterCultural Education
At the International Women’s Day Google TechMakers’ and Caribbean Women in Tech Summit I highlighted the need for valuing the knowledge and heritage of the Caribbean and its diasporas.
I also appealed to Google and other tech giants to recognise and reward our creative contributions and underscored the need for dedicated resources for digitisation and development of creative interactive intercultural educational materials in a region which continues to be drowned in colonial inaccuracies and misrepresentations. I noted the lack of trained, skilled and qualified persons who can bridge the development divides among media, education and culture and the need for remunerations for development of creative intercultural educational content relevant to the needs of the Latin American and Caribbean and their diasporas, SIDS, Global South.

Steelpan FesTTscapes in LiTTscapes
The steelpan is featured in the section FesTTscapes in my book LiTTscapes – Landscapes of Fiction which was launched as the official commemorative publication of the 50th/Jubilee Anniversary of the Independence of Trinidad and Tobago from colonial rule.
Steelpan, along with other rich and vibrant oral and literary cultural heritage traditions as chutney music, dance, dramatisations couples with intellectual discussions on sustainable development and pertinent socio-cultural issues also feature at our LiTTours and Global to Local LiTTributes, which began with our launch of LiTTscapes at WhiteHall, the premier architectural landmark of Trinidad and Tobago’s Capital City.
Global LiTTributes- Tributes to Our Interconnected Global Heritage
Our Global LiTTributes are interactive edutainment outreach and engagement that connect with the Caribbean diasporas across the Americas and Europe and other diasporas
At the LiTTribute to the Americas, as we celebrated and underscored the role of migrants across the Americas with the Trinidad and Tobago Diaspora, we were entertained by the steelpan music of Randolph Karamath. Karamath is a Trinidad-born panman who became one of the pioneer teachers of steelpan in mainstream education in Toronto.
Psssst: I also made my steelpan debut at LiTTribute to the Americas during ‘A Reading and a Roti’ at Lallo’s, a West Indian Restaurant in Florida in 2018.

Under the expert tutelage of Karamath, I presented what is now the theme song of our Global LiTTributes to our interconnected Culinary Traditions. It is in an old ditty, sung in our communities, that established the IndoTrinidadian Chutney musical and related traditions and a special favourite of Ma, that features in mDNA MotherContinent – The MultiMedia MicroEpic of the Anthropocene, the new creative genre.

Musical Interconnections
All of our initiatives involve connections with musical heritage interconnections. Steelpan with other musical forms are the backdrop of the MultiMedia MicroEpic and our Children’s Festival Fables.
Deepening Heritage Interconnections with Google
Thank you Google for celebrating our Caribbean creativity with its Google Doodle and celebrating the steelpan musical instrument invented in the 21st century from small island Trinidad off South America.
I look forward to deepening and our connections as a global Woman Tech Maker and Google Digital Skills Ambassador.
