Traditional meaning
a. noun. The right of voting in political elections, a view expressed
by voting; a vote; opinion in support of a proposal.
b. (Especially in plural) a prayer made by a priest in the liturgy; a
short prayer made by a congregation especially in response to a
priest; an intercessory prayer.
Contemporary meaning:
a. From suffer, verb. Undergo, experience or be subjected to pain,
grief, damage, defeat; put up with, tolerate, undergo martyrdom,
allow.
b. From sufferance — tacit consent, abstinence from objection, sub-
missiveness.
Figurative
The pain, grief, damage inflicted on a populace by politicians in
the process of seeking power, having populace exercise its vote;
The submissiveness, blind loyalty, tolerance demanded by those
who seek one’s vote.
