The locals believe that those who show up for the Maha Kumbh Mela that takes place once every 144 years are not from planning or design but by Divine will! It is a time when the planets align.
‘The entire universe comes to earth here at this time. There is nothing to stop anyone from coming. It is divine will that brings chosen ones here,” says Arun Shukla, a devotee and resident of Prayagraj who takes a daily dip as he extends hospitality to visitors.
Vortex of Immortality
With this, millions from across the world are gathering to commemorate this timeless tradition of taking a sacred bath in the Sangam, the place of convergence of three rivers identified in the Vedas as the Ganga, Jamuna and Saraswati. They join million of pilgrims from around India who are also being pulled into this vortex for a simple ritual of renewal that promises immortality from a dip in the Sangam.
This legendary age-old festival of the Maha Kumbh Mela manifests in its fullest form. Inscribed on the UNESCO Representative Heritage List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, it aligns with many cultural practices of our region, which will unfold in subsequent posts.
In the cycle of time, as recorded in the immortal annals of the oldest known treatise of creation, the Gods joined forces to rid the world of negativity.
Now, millions are converging on the site to participate and to experience the holy dip.
A Pravasi in Prayagraj
Invited by the Government of India as part of a diaspora contingent of 21 social media influencers and content creators from around the world, I joined the throngs to take the plunge into Prayagraj’s sacred Sangam, the place of convergence of India’s three historic water courses, the Ganga, Yamuna and the Saraswati that dried up for the most part many moons ago.
I came to the Sangam in Prayagraj on the heels of the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas with selected Social Influencers and Content Creators of the diaspora, and stayed on to plunge into the prayful depths of Prayagraj’s eclectic multiculturalism and get insights into the Sangam’s saints, sadhus, and citizens who are responding to the immortal call. Stay tuned for interviews and insights!
Story of MahaKumbh
A legendary attempt to churn the Ocean of Samskara brought up 14 gifts, the most coveted of all is the amrit, the nectar of eternal life for which Demons wrestled with Gods to monopolise. In trying to secure this divine substance, Lord Vishnu, carrying the Kumbh (pot) in which it as contained, spilled four drops as he wrestled it from the demons.
They fell to earth at the four Tirthas of Prayag, Haridwar, Nasik and Ujjain. Every six years people gather to relive and bathe in the waters of these districts in India and every144 years, the planets align and the world gathers to revel in the spot the nectar fell in Prayagraj – the divinely ordained place for prayer and worship.
“Those who come are already chosen, they have no will to resist, nor is it part of any man made plan. It is Divine will,” says Shukla.
Join me as I explore the magic, the mystery of the monumental unfolding of this historic occurrence at this UNESCO World Heritage Site as I churn out as a content creator the jewels and gems, amrit and elixir here displays of our human family and delve into what it means for the Post Pandemic Planet.

In the cut and thrust of a toxic political culture with a petticoat obsession that leaves many-a-knickers-in-a-twist, how is the USA treating with skews, biases and prejudices that persist in the political playpen and reflecting in its polling analyses, media outputs, advertising and campaign prospects?
