Where Gender Violence is Norm
Trinidad and Tobago, and indeed across the Caribbean, persistently high rates of violence against women is almost two-times higher than the global average or one in every 3. Let that sink in for a momoent. Almost 75 of every 100 women around you have experienced violence of some form. You get it?
This continues to baffle development “experts” and provide fodder for new commissioned ‘studies’ that somehow manage to make nobody wiser.
This is, after all, women championed Zone of Peace, a region where women’s educational achievement, like gender-based violence, surpasses global averages, as do showcases of bikini-clad bottoms and bossoms on tranquil picture-postcard shores.
But there is little spotlight on the stark naked truth our women are also generally fewer among those hired, promoted, and in leadership across public, private, academic, and political spheres, ent I have been telling you as living example?
This contradiction of higher violence plus higher education plus lower leadership placement, is often framed as an anomaly, a paradox. It may raise a slight eyebrow as a statistical curiosity in the hallowed hallways of development agenda-setting, yes, I’ve been there. It may be footnoted, briefly glanced at, maybe even puzzled over for a moment, and then abandoned as the development caravan moves on to its next agenda item.
Lack of Cultural Intelligence
Development ‘experts,’ local ones, tagging onto imported notions, as are the new technologies without cultural intelligence, label this as a statistical curiosity, as anomaly and paradox.
They may briefly note, politely puzzle over, before drifting off as the sporadic candle-light Savannnah vigilantes, and development caravan moves on to its next agenda item.
But it comes back to haunt as more and more women occupy roles in the senior spheres find themselves slapped with ‘Jamette’ labels.
But the past is prologue, the future is jamettry in encore.
