Dr Kris Rampersad shares experiencing the village in the globe and returning the Globe to the Village About that Coonoomoonoou
Spread the love
Coonoomoonoou is largely misrepresented in online definitions. It is not so much stupid or foolish as it is reticent, shy, or invisible. The word is one our ancestors brought here with them from India, rooted in the Bhojpuri/Hindi coonuh moonuh, meaning ‘little baby’. It speaks less of deficiency than of being shy and as a result, overlooked, even trampled on or bullied!
I was therefore surprised when SEO, the new dictator of visibility, greenlighted this word from local parlance as the headline of this presentation on our village in the global village, after flagging my slang flavours all year!
Pokney Trini Slang from Bhojpuri Literarily New Words by Dr Kris
Gifting the Village to the Global Tech Emperors
Perhaps my not-so-subtle buff (ahem) plea and call to action to the world’s Tech Emperors earlier this month to get with it and use their prowess to reverse the lingering damaging effects of the colonial mentality erasing our villages from global futures! Indeed, the responses to One Tech Minute to Reverse the Macaulay Minute was virtually instantaneous.
Humph! Would you believe that within days I received notice (among others) from Facebook informing me that my viewership was being increased? And this although I did not mentioning its jefe, Mark Zuckerberg, given my focus on the diaspora.
AuthenTHINK Times Person of the Year Flip The Script on Colonised Media One Minute to Heal History with Dr Kris Rampersad
If ever there was proof of how visibility is manipulated by mighty algorithms, this was it.
That’s what actioning policy means. But these are just coonoomoonoo steps from these Giants of Industry, but more on snapping Emperors to attention as these Year in Review actions and achievements unfold!

Returning to Village from the Globe
After months of global trotting, through ancestral villages that, in many ways, seeded our own, I returned to my village to share the spirit of Christmas with the elderly.
It marked a full circle. Almost exactly a year ago, I had been called back to the same village to speak with preschoolers, sending them off to their “big schools.” Then, I had coddoodled those kiddies, instilling in them that they are smarter than a smartphone. From that encounter emerged the theme song for my technology advocacy which you must be enjoying in the backdrop to my videos: “Smarter Than a Smart Phone.”
Propelling into the Post Pandemic Planet past the diseased illformed and illfitting systems of the past
I cannot, nor should you, ignore what new technologies are doing to our village. Their impact on the elderly, on traditions, and on culture itself. As in my focus with the kiddies, I took the opportunity to not only share some of my experiences of returning some disappearing elements of culture in India, which we have preserved in the diaspora, but also my memories of growing up in the village and to egg on the Women’s Group who invited me on how to use these technologies, differently: to capture, safeguard, and transmit village memories; to preserve lived wisdom; and to build community Knowledge Banks, as I had pitched during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Home District Tones & Flavours (ahem) buffing!
Here is part-excerpt of my Christmas engagement with the elderly.
Will share the full version that includes the first movement of experiences of taking our Village into the Globe subsequently.
In Fields of Barley Pravasi Homecoming EPIC Journeys through Landscapes and Mindscapes of World Heritage & History Not Pilgrim but Pravasi Dr Kris Rampersad India Journeys
Of course, when delivered in the tone of local dialect flavours, the spoken version sounds somewhat different.
This represents the part of returning the globe to the village.
You know, almost exactly one year ago, I was called back to this same village school to speak to preschoolers who were graduating from here to go to “big school” across the road and elsewhere. Little children, just starting their life’s journey.
When I was growing up, our preschool was the Mandir and Pa’s gardens – some of my best memories and learning happened right here, before I started Big School across the road, which was a very different kind of learning environment, from this formal schooling, eh! And maybe that’s how it should be! You learn your family trade first!
Full Circle from PreSchoolers to District Elders
So today feels like a full circle. A year ago, speaking to infants setting off on their life’s journey. And now, here I am, closing this year by speaking to you seasoned seniors. And as elders, you understand better than anyone how all these experiences are connected.
Some of you might have heard my song song of mine, Smarter Than a Smart Phone. That song actually came out of that speech to the children last year. Who knows, maybe what we share here today might turn into a film, or a book, or something even bigger, because stories have a way of growing bigger and beyond us.
Dr Kris Rampersad shares experiencing the village in the globe and returning the Globe to the Village About that Coonoomoonoou
I want to turn away from my experiences, to yours, right here, in this village.
Heart & Mind of Districts
You are the heart and mind of this community. You are our people’s memory, yes, even if some memories feel a little faded! You carry knowledge of our roots and foundations.
The things you lived through, just everyday things, raising families, these are no small thing. Who nowadays could raise ten or twelve children? That is a whole dinner party in Europe, I discovered with plenty planning and anxiety. One my my friends in Europe when I was there, came to me panting and anxious that she is having a dinner party. How many people, I asked. Twelve she said. I said that is my family at breakfast, lunch and dinner growing up.
You did that every single day!

You may think it is a small thing, but it is no small thing! Your experiences working the land. Your struggles for acceptance.
How you and your families helped build this district.
Rooted in Culture & Traditions
Some of you may know Ma, how she kept rooted in culture. Some of you remember how she played dholak and led wedding songs at matikor, barahi, before DJs took over. Those are things we need to bring back, eh Women’s Group? Homework!
Today, instead of me talking to you, I would really prefer you talking to me. Telling your stories.
Some of you walk miles to school even barefooted, like we did in the first years ent?

Village Boy Who Became Prime Minister
Ent some of you sit next to the boy you didn’t know he would one day become our Prime Minister, whose name is on this preschool?
And gosh this irks me really, every time I walk in here so let me get it off meh chest before this year ends! School principal and teachers of this and the school across the road and the one on New Grant junction, how about changing the image of Sesame Street Ernie and Bert you have on the walls outside and putting instead the stalwarts of this village eh – Prime Minister Panday, and Frank who founded the preschool and Miss Olive and others for the school across the road.

People to Aspire To Become
Give the district’s children heroes and heroines they could be proud of! That is part of our traditions so we don’t erase them from our memories!
You know I wasn’t leaving here without giving you homework!
Ent most of you have cell phones. Use them for more than liking and sharing foolishness and bacchanal on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok. Use them to record your stories. Create what I call our Community Knowledge Bank.
Record family stories, the painful and funny moment. Record village characters, like drunken Bulio, falling into the drain and sleeping it off before he get up and head how, who remember him?
Teachers as Heroes & Heroines
The teachers who were the backbone of holding us up. Teacher Frank, who celebrating 60 years in community service and built this pre-school too! I remember my teachers Alex, and Randy and Ms Olive who shaped my early life!

Traditional Knowledge Medicines Crafts
Bush medicine, techniques for planting crops ‘by the moon’, how we does talk and cook on the chulha, games we played, the Easter bazaars and who get crowned Bazaar Queen, how you stretched a dollar, how you survived.
Changing fashion, games, festivals. How we made carnival costumes from newspaper and beat biscuit pans for steelpan, and bottle and spoon.
Your are the mind and memory of our district!

I ask the Women’s group, the schools in the district, the mandir, mosque and the church to come together and bring the young people, your sons, daughters, grandsons and granddaughters and great grands and you share your stories and experiences of back in the de day, eh!
Remember When?
Remember how we cram-up in one car, dozens of us, to go to visit family, or visit Port of Spain or go to the beach.
And when we didn’t have transport to go to Princes Town, have to wait hours for the one taxi to return and didn’t mind being crammed like sardines. Shall I send a Memo to the Ministers of Finance, and Transport and about this new hefty fine for overcramming vehicles, eh? Lol! Indeed it had its social value in keeping us together in this cramped island space!
These are survival techniques, that the young people don’t know and hence they don’t know how to cope with life: How you stretched the dollar, shared clothes, and hand me down shoes.
Yes when we didn’t have lights, listening to stories like all of us and Bumpus family did nightly stories on Pa’s bed, when we didn’t have TV. It could rival Netflix anyday!
About growing up, traditions, the sad and even funny moments.
These will help us create a record for your children and grandchildren.
These stories show how resilient and accommodating and creative we can be!
I’d love for you to share your memories. There are so many things along with your experiences, so we can have a bank of the minds of our village that many generations can enjoy. As I have been encouraging our other districts across the region and across joint diasporas, to create!
Dr Kris Rampersad World Heritage Journey to World Heritage Blue and John Crow Mountains Jamaica
And congratulations to the Women’s Group for your work in holding this district together and making our elders continue to be engaged in meaningful ways. And I invite you to join be to lobby for a facility where we could contain the heritage of this and the districts around! We have the blue print! We need action now!
This end of year season is a time for reminiscing, so start now, this season when your family gather, and you could invite me from sorrel and gingerbeer, and my favourite black cake and curry goat and duck – yes, Tanty across the road, dey, The Parlour Lady, still make the best! Ent yuh know!
Like the engravings on the centuries old temple walls, you live forever through your stories!
And my cameras will be rolling for all of you who want to share your good cheer!
So Merry Christmas, Happy New Year and I wish you all the joys of your times ahead!
