Power of One! An AuthenTHINK Intel AnalyEthics Autopsy of News of the Day

From First Words To Last Autopsy of News of the Day and what one story can do
Spread the love
Can one news story da all this? This one did, and not knowing it did might have caused News of the Day her Life!
When Trinidad and Tobago woke on Monday September 20, 1993 it was greeted by a distinct difference in the air.
It was a refreshing blast of a new journalism.
Islanders young and old picked up a new tabloid sized daily they were being teased about for weeks, wrapped in national colours Red, White and Black Ink.
But it was the cover story that got them. More than something missing, or absent, something was new, different, present!
It had all the qualities of a classic hard-hitting front-page news story. It spoke of death and violence, despair and hopelessness all of which dominated the news of the day. It was laden with statistics, and the stats-gap of under-reporting and under-represented in public and police records.
Yes, it was a story about police too and about the crime-sphere, about poison, hanging, shooting!
Until it was not.
News Media, Power and Politics From First Words To Last Requiem to News of the Day
Shout-Out To Life
“5,000 Lives Saved!”
The headline was not a scream of death, but a shout-out to life! While the nation consumed its daily ration of blood and gore with morning coffee and nightly news, this front page chose another register altogether. Its theme was life, not death; hope, not despair; human connection, not corruption and crime.
It had all the components of the news of the day, but none of its flavour.
That was what made the difference!
It was, in fact, a marked departure from the news of the day. Newsday’s advertising, in days ahead, the building-up to this morning had teased of the coming of the ‘Good News.’ This was Good News fleshed and flashed in the headlines of a new newspaper about life, not death, not despair, but about hope, success and triumph. It was about ‘5000 Lives Saved.’
But there was more to that first article, something that has been largely overlooked in all assessments of Newsday’s birth to date. Why these early pieces of my mid-journalism career, bore a marked brand of difference, why it was a signal for the new journalism I continue to champion.
Autopsy REquiem Rennaissance the Trilogy of News of the Day and the Media Renaissance
Human Spirit
It was a story about the human spirit extending itself quietly. Privately. Confidentially. Without chest-thumping, without seeking reward or recognition.
It celebrated communities, ordinary men and women giving of themselves. Volunteers reaching out to help strangers, in stark contrast to the greed and corruption that dominated the headlines of the time, and now. The statistics revealed that many of these volunteers were young adults, an implied rebuke to the prevailing narrative that condemned the next generation as lost, misdirected, and part of the nation’s downward spiral.
They were giving a literal Lifeline of hope, to others. Thousands of hours spent talking people from off the ledge without remuneration, recognition, nor reward.
That was the climate of the country then: despair, hopelessness, depression, despair. Suicidal. Daily news and headlines fed, amplified and normalized this hopelessness, rather than challenge or alleviate it.
Ordinarily, such a story would never have made the front page, no capture headlines but be buried. At best, it would have been buried inside the paper in a few paragraphs, or as a feature inside the news; at worst, ignored entirely.
There was something else radically different about it.

Small Micro Invisible
This was not a story about conglomerates, government misdemeanours, or the diseased engines of the State and its democracy. It was the story of a small NGO, manned entirely by volunteers.
NGOs were the unseen glue holding together the fraying fabric of a fractured State. Their work rarely made headlines. Many never made the papers at all. Their celebratory press releases were routinely discarded into oblivion. They too lived with despair, at being invisible, largely ignored.
And here was one commanding the front page.
It was a story that trumpeted the efforts of women, generally invisible, from all our statistical analyses, were less visible in the news. Not only was the NGO led by a woman, so were most of its volunteers.
An interesting twist is that the victims of suicidal despair were not women, but men. Almost 90 percent of those efforts were to save the lives, mainly of men who could not cope with the pressures of the society.
It was a story not like any other Front Page Headline Grabber. It was about life! It was about women, saving men. It was about young people selflessly giving of their time dedicated to the greater good. It was about the small entities which hold the fabric of our society together. And then some.

Off City-Centric
More than that, the story was not city-centric. It carried an off-centre, community-rooted sensibility. It launched Newsday’s strength towards building a base in communities.
Micro, small and medium businesses, who could not afford to advertise in the main offerings of the day, long priced out of the dominant newspapers by soaring advertising rates, found space in Newsday. My friends in advertising and in circulation and their small units did the 24/7 for over 30 years to tap into then to try to hold on to these communities, pounding on doors, and untreaded paths.
For the large and generally city-centric advertising firms were skeptical, taking a ‘wait and see’ attitude until they would arm-wrest the paper from this grassroots base, pushing up its price, alienating its core support, part of which was the fall out from the Guardian’s tectonic fragmentation from tensions between editorial, owners and hostility to the new political regime of the day.
And accompanying the front page story was the warm embrace of friendship of two young girls of different ethnicities, who had just met at school.

The signal to the nation was unmistakable.
The dawn of a new day. The Good News. A beginning for a nation to heal!
And I was The Good News Reporter, a brand that would hover over most of my life’s work, as closely as the theme song of Cross Country by Oliver Chapman, as the song track of my life!
That, too, might have seemed coincidental.
Until it was not.
(Incidentally doing this discectomy makes me realise how unconsciously such journalism work with NGOS would have directed my path to use the emerging new media to bridge citizen journalism and build the field of communication for development.)
A New Day for Journalism Requiem to News of the Day flashback to the Prospectus on Newsday’s Founding Team
Of the eight faces featured in the Newsday prospectus, all but one shared that vision and passion for journalism as a public good. And it was that one – just one – who would insist on diverting a highway leading a nation to healing, into the grease-filled pit and the clawing tentacles of the dark underside of the Petro-Curse from which grips it has been unable to unwind, stamping out this attempt at diversifying news, by leaving it pandering and pawing for patronage, as it has every other attempt for every and eny other sector to diversify and stand independent and self sufficient.
Know the NewScape
Lack of understanding of the market and society its serves propelled the end of Newsday.
It’s alienation from base, as even the political parties must now be awakening to, mark the beginning of its prolonged end.
These elements – conscious understanding of the value of journalism and journalists and news media is what makes the difference, what will mark the media survivors in today’s age of exploding digital technologies and AI.
For the most part, this has totally eluded all the analysts selected to pay homage in Newsday’s past.
And that is the ultimate axe.
A journalism that starves off critical thinking, is no journalism at all! Yes, write that as my epitaph!

It selection of reality that it forced and imposed, on people who have been through centuries of selective erasure, oppression and denial could spot that brand from any distance.
Along with its key and core actors’ reticence and skepticism about technologies and slow pace of adaptation, lack of knowledge, appreciation or understanding of its roots and its base by its inheritors alienated it, inhibited its capacity to evolve, and led to its demise that we now mourn.
Note not once have I mentioned its lack of affiliation to a conglomerate or its inability to attract real interest beyond the political patronage on which it had cultivated dependency to align with its core interests and signalled purposes.
Futuring the MediaScape
The Elephant in the Room: Free Expression in a Minefield: Media reform conversations often orbit around technology, revenue models, or audience engagement. They rarely confront the central danger: The deliberate and systemic seeding of minefields against free and independent expression.
Partisan pressure. Corporate influence. Gatekeeping through access. Subtle blacklisting. Quiet strangulation of income streams.
For those of us carrying the mandate for transformative agendas, seeking to widen space for ostracised majorities, women, rural communities, and “beyond-the-lighthouse” geopolitical jurisdictions, the mediascape is especially treacherous.
Neutrality is not protection. Silence buys survival. Truth demands courage and a long Lifeline
Demokrissy, my blog, emerged directly from interference with my space for free expression and opinion. It was a refusal to surrender voice. But it soon became clear that individual platforms, however resilient, were insufficient. What is needed was not merely more content. What was needed was infrastructure.

Recentring the Global Knowledge Ecosystem
The GloCal Knowledge Pot grew from a deeper realisation:
Media is no longer just a messenger. It is now a central pillar of the knowledge ecosystem.
In a world where information shapes policy, markets, culture, and consciousness, journalism must be embedded inside systems that support:
It must be aligned with education and culture, not siloed away from them. It is the Raison d’Etre of The GloCal Knowledge Pot and the satellite of offerings under Leaves of Life and my Knowledge Research Information Services and Resources.
This represents a radical departure from colonially entrenched separation-of-powers models that fracture systems at the foundation and render intersectionality, inter-institutionality, and partnership largely performative. (I would say more on this later)
The GloCal Knowledge Pot is under reconstruction and designed to accommodate along with its popular archives and blog:
Knowledge Library & Intelligence Hub
Multimedia Museums
Virtual Themed Showcases,
AuthenTHINK Times Person of the Year Flip The Script on Colonised Media One Minute to Heal History with Dr Kris Rampersad
E-Galleries & Tours; A Policy & Intelligence Unit; An Academy: Incubator/Lab/Hub.
It will bolster existing strands as the GloCal Caribbean Creative & Literary Salon.
These build from its new hybrid forms and frameworks:
CEIBA-EDUtainment, The MultiMedia MicroEpic
Critical Thinking Mechanisms as AuthenTHINK INTEL, AI AnalyEthics
And an unfolding ecosystem of related content, new endeavours
Journalism becomes one expression within a living, breathing knowledge superstructure. Stories do not disappear after publication. They become datasets. They feed archives. They inform curricula. They shape policy intelligence. News shifts from being an endpoint to being a gateway.
The GloCal Knowledge Pot reclaims time as a democratic resource. Time to research. Time to contextualise. Time to revisit, reflect, analyse. Time to connect patterns across decades. This is not nostalgia for a slower age. It is futurism. Because journalism without memory becomes spectacle.
Recoding the New Global Order 10 M Views Dr KRis Rampersad Defying SEO & Algorithms
A Triumphant Emergence
The emergence of the GloCal Knowledge Pot is triumphant not because it is perfect, or complete, or immune to struggle. It is triumphant because it exists, against all the odds and the minefields that continue to explode in its chosen path, including starvation from funding.
But the Glocal Knowledge Pot Refutes the lie that small states cannot build big thinking systems; that post-colonial societies cannot author our own futures. It treats journalism not as a dying industry, but as a civilisational necessity.
The GloCal Knowledge Pot is living proof of The Power of One!
This is not a departure from journalism. It is journalism remembering what it was always meant to be, as an architect of public intelligence, guardian of collective memory and catalyst for structural change.
In an oil-cursed, patriarchally blinkered, colonially haunted society, conditioned into amnesia and mindless forgetfulness, that remembering is revolutionary.
And revolution, in this moment, is infrastructure.

Author’s Note Get Involved
This is just one AuthenTHINK Intel AnalyEthics of one of the thousands of news and other articles, speeches, papers, presentations that form part of my unstructured, undigitized archives. In there are the seeds for cultivating new pathways for development. Not just in news, culture, education, gender empowerment, environment, cultural economics, and more recently in data science and AI technologies. Wherever I saw gaps and lag, I learnt the core elements of the arena so I can understand what it would take to being healing.
It is from this pad of competence and confidence and optimism in our future that the GloCal Knowledge Pot is now set to launch into full form!
