As we face explosion of crime and as the world explodes in conflict and wars, local and international mechanisms for building intercultural inclusion and peace do not fully benefit from the strengths of diaspora connections.
There is need to rethink the modes of information and communications as well as education and to reshape global mechanisms to better advance multicultural engagement of global diasporas with their interconnected heritage.
So said multilateral development analyst, heritage educator and creative content innovator Dr Kris Rampersad as she participates in the world’s largest diaspora gathering at India’s Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) and MahaKumbh Mela.
She will be a special guest of the Government of India as a Social Media Influencer/Content Creator of the Diaspora. A Guru of Innovative Creative Educational Content, Dr Rampersad is pioneering AuthenThink Intel for ethical AI analyses (AI AnalyEthics) to bridge gaps between Artificial and Natural Intelligence, CEIBA-EDUtainment to deepen use of Digital & Multimedia Creations for creative\culture-sensitive education, StoryScience to mesh scientific, imaginative, intuitive and creative learning methods through innovative Traditions net Technologies techniques which won the Innovation Council’s Lumination Award. She composed the song Smarter Than A Smart Phone to champion restoring the value of human intelligence systems for pre-school graduands in her home district in 2024.
Multiculturalism Underutilised in Global Systems
“Many of these multicultural heritage elements are yet to be fully explored and utilised to build the intercultural understanding and the much-desired culture of peace,” she said, citing the need for technical and financial support as she pitched some innovative initiatives to drive a new awakening on how diasporas engage with each other and with their grand-motherlands and cultures. Noting the recent visit of India’s Prime Minister, Narendra Modi and his engagements with CARICOM, she stated that even CARICOM has yet to fully explore and appreciate its role in bridging the gaps for engagements with diasporas.
An independent researcher, scholar and award-winning journalist, Dr Rampersad a former editor of the Sunday Guardian, was a guest of the first Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) with Nobel Laureate, Sir Vidia Naipaul, Sir Shridath Ramphal and Former Acting President Dr Linda Baboolal (all deceased) in 2003. The PBD hosts Non-Resident Indians (NRI) and Persons of Indian Origin (PIO) to commemorate the return of Mahatma Gandhi from South Africa to India in 1915.
Dr Rampersad will be part of PBD 2025, in Odisha, India. PBD has become the world’s largest diaspora gathering is in its 18th edition.
Culture Centred Development
Through her media and interactive engagements, she will further pursue strengthening engagements between culture and development as it impacts multiple sectors and as a driver for change and a force for resilience while deepening comparative analyses of culture-centred development and assessing the strides made by India towards become the world’s third largest from its current status as the fifth largest world economy, and as a leader of the Global South.
She will also witness and participate in the 2025 MahaKumbh Mela, an age-old festival that has become the world’s largest festival and iconic in the spheres of heritage tourism anticipating an influx of some 400 million visitors, that almost doubles on the numbers when it was last staged. MahaKumbh Mela occurs only every 144 years, alligned to planetary movements. It is inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
From these, with other engagements she will be building partnership initiatives to pivot understandings of how culture shapes development across sectors. At the same time, these experiences will feed into a sequel to her doctoral thesis since published as Finding A Place, to evolve into multimedia comparative film on the development of diaspora and the Global South.
