I am looking on at the unfolding drama regarding the National Gas Company, the sale of Banyan Archives to Barbados at CARIFESTA XV wanting to be amused, except that it is so tragic.
The tragedy is that we jamming still modus operandi makes us oblivious to the reality that we are losing our pivotal place as a regional leader to others more quick on the draw. The currency of trade is our national patrimony and the sovereignty that our IP brings.
Core here is how the National Gas Company is using similar extraction techniques of moving gas from the ground to syphon out national trust and cultivated respect our communities hold for each other and to undermine the natural bonds rooted in our communities
From Dutch Disease to T&T Black Gold Epidemic
It is the untold story of how the Dutch Disease took root in the national psyche – which I am developing – to the point where it has now reached epidemic proportions. Anyone trying to unravel its impact has a tall task of extracting these tentacles gripping our institutions and systems of governance in mesmerizing paralysis of dependencies.
We watch the boat sail, waving and applauding, oblivious to the reality that there goes our national patrimony, another slice of national identity, a foundation block of our knowledge economy. It will also lure away our creators, innovators, leaders with intellect who can steer the ship of State out of choppy waters.
Wave and Applaud Exodus of Patrimony
Yet the national community continues waving and applauding, conditioned to accept the ingrained system of mercantilism that bleeds us dry of development as we ship off our best assets to be processed in other lands and sent back to us at a price we can ill afford.
It feeds consumerism – is we culture, ent, never mind we can hardly recognize ourselves in it anymore.
Divide and Rule as CSR and ESG
But that is not all. One would be hard-pressed to find in its balance sheet how as an institution of State its modus operandi was orchestrated to divide and rule, to suck out the natural bonds that exist as foundation stone of over multicultural communities seemingly safely removed from the corporate crab in crab barrel scramble for board positions and promotions.
The virus manifests dressed as Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) initiatives and give-back projects but they are ripping the fabric of our communities apart.
Extraction Techniques
They give different complexion and meaning as exercised by these groups that laying on their drilling, extraction, pressure, fracturing. These are all common techniques the agency employs to extract natural gas from pockets underground.
They are also techniques it applies to our social and cultural relationships to ensure that our nation remains fractured, as it drills into social relations and hemorrhages our life blood.
They are casing and cementing individual and groups into dependency syndrome with pittance of patronizing funding, isolating and blocking off their engagements with larger ecosystem that would be stronger in bonding and partnerships and funneling funds to feeding feuds in the name of CSR and ESG.
This underscores the failures we witness from hundreds of community projects that fail to yield anticipated results – funds poured down literal gaseous black holes, dug by the company for the society.
Experience not Theory and Talk
I am not talking in abstraction. I am talking from experience.
I launched LiTTscapes – Landscapes of Fiction networking a community of artists and cultural workers, parents, children, diplomats and decision makers. Several of veteran writers and creators with whom I had cultivated life-long experiences held front row seats of honour, nodding appreciatively as the programme unfolded with children bringing our intellectual landscapes not just to life, but with a promise of perpetuity. It was part of unfolding a plan for longevity and sustainability that is absent in national patronage and treatment of the artistic, education, tourism, agriculture, cultural and other sectors. Within moments of these, several were pressured by various interests.
The National Gas Company, the universities and other agencies and institutions show their colours every day. Rather than custodians, they are actively driving social strife that empower criminals that has a direct bloodtrail to our current State of Emergency.
States of Emergency
Trinidad and Tobago is not just in a State of Emergency against Crime, but also in a State of Emergency in Education, in Media, in Culture, in Tourism, in Agriculture and Foreign Exchange and most of all our intercultural relations all indicating social regression and a negative development spiral.
We need to ‘tear up’ the development model and look to the new blueprint, as the ones I have been waving about. as part of my endless and ongoing campaign and efforts to build more sustainable ‘community knowledge banks’
Barbados Prime Minister, Mia Mottley is demonstrating her astute regional vision in rescuing the audio-visual archives of Banyan that aligns to her own innovative Debt-find-Climate-Finance Bridgetown Initiative.
The NGC fiasco that allowed these valuable archives to slip out is only a symptom of the deeper national malaise.
Called To Account
Who is holding these agencies to account? They need to seriously look at their modus operandi as it also spills into regional and international arenas as well, promotes discrimination, causing social strife, driving criminality, and also causing Trinidad and Tobago to lose its place as a leader in regional development.
Petroleum Power Purse disguised as CSR & ESG
I have many experiences of my own and which individuals, groups and communities share with me in my efforts trying to minimize racial and other social tensions towards finding sustainable livelihoods from local knowledge and know how, creativity, culture to build a knowledge economy to transform cultural heritage, education and other sectors.
Agencies like NGC persistently use the petroleum power purse to promote social strife and undermine relationships.
These are disguised as Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Environmental and Social Governance (ESG) give-back projects but they are ripping the fabric of our communities apart.
From Dutch Disease to T&T Black Gold Epidemic
Rather than being passive vectors of the Dutch Disease, they are active agents of what we can now rename ‘Trinidad and Tobago Black Gold Epidemic.’
They are not only making the communities and the culture sector persistently dependent through trickling patronizing handouts, a classic ‘Dutch Disease’ syndrome, the traditional term used in reference to economies that have become so dependent on petroleum that it paralyses other sectors.
Active Agents of Social Strife
More than that, persons in these agencies have leveraged to a fine art how to use the power from wealth of our natural resources to actively drive wedges to cripple the knowledge creative, cultural and heritage, agriculture sectors and divide players so sectors that rely on cooperation and solidarity become fragmented, persistently needy and reliant on a trickle patronizing handouts, to ensure no sector rise on par with the dominant energy sector. It is the ultimate abuse of public power!
I have dossiers of examples agencies like NGC and the universities step in and through pressure, bribery and give other inducements to create conditions for the creative sector and communities to go at each-others’ throats.”
Power Pressure to Accept Patronising Pittance
The late author Michael Anthony with whom I enjoyed a close collaboration for decades, as a journalist, writer producer and publisher bringing his value as writer and historian to public through my very many programmes from newspaper Discover Trinidad and Tobago, television series as Booktalk and Cross Country and more recently with my book LiTTscapes – Landscapes of Fiction with its holistic approach to lifting the value of the knowledge sector through accompanying LiTTours, LiTTeas and LiTTributes.
Anthony knew and was always grateful that I took a personal interest in and valued his work, as I have done with Nobel Laureate Derek Walcott’s Sir Vidia Naipaul and many others which recognition and value culminates in LiTTscapes – and new evolving global editions, EPIC Landscapes and Mindscapes of Heritage & History.
Anthony died with sour taste of regret on his tongue as he was pressured away by industry leaders after our inaugural LiTTour which you may recall, brought significant public glare on the underdeveloped state of heritage assets in the oil town of Mayaro with some unsustainable pittance.
Cutting Nose To Spite Face
There are numerous similar examples, classic cases of ‘cutting off our nose to spite our face’ including in our efforts to get UNESCO heritage recognition.
Even the most eager of newbie politicians must first remove the tentacles that these have entrenched, before we can move forward.
My very many blueprint and sustainable development masterplans with new models, tools, techniques and action blueprints to pivot the multidimensional creative and cultural heritage sectors out of its underdeveloped pit, can be available at a pittance of their market value.
As you well know, I have been trying to develop this GLoCaL Knowledge Pot as a knowledge repository that can bolster our IP and Knowledge Sectors. Trinidad and Tobago continues to sit in the waving gallery while its intellectual and other assets fly away to develop other nations in a changing international landscape.
