Experience Matters in Heritage
Footloose and Free with footprints across a World of Heritage! On cool rainy days like these I get a warm fuzzy feeling reflecting on my investment in experiences not just theoretical research. So I finally took a look at the many World Heritage elements – tangible and intangible – that have embraced me and which carry albeit invisible marks of my footprints in my earthly wanderings.
These include properties on the UNESCO World Heritage List inscribed by 170 countries (listed below) My footprints here table the impressions made on already inscribed UNESCO World Heritage sites. This list does not include listings under other UNESCO Instruments and Mechanisms which I also count within my spheres of expertise such as lists of Intangible Cultural Heritage, Memory of the World, Creative Cities, Diversity of Cultural Expressions, Man and Biosphere, Geoparks, Indentured, Slave and Silk Routes among others – Yes! UNESCO is a massive bureaucratic system. Itis from this experiene along with understanding the mechanics and machinery of UNESCO and global systems alongside communities of interest at local and regional levels that I have used opportunities for intervention to help rationalize and create synergies within the local to global systems to enhance the visibility of regions, nations and elements left out of the global conversations…. There is still a long way to go in this!

Significantly, much of the region described as ‘the Global South” which includes Latin America and the Caribbean, Asia-Pacific and Africa regions are under-represented in these I have continuously used my knowledge, experiences and interventions at local to global levels to advance our regional cause, along with working to enhance and upgrade national and regional mechanisms when requested to do so. But we do need to speed up ad step up efforts before AI starts rewriting the heritage we are yet to retrieve and it be lost forever. See video in link or click below.
The processes are in many respects in various stages of readiness and require greater consistency than the sporadic attempts so far.
Enhancing Caribbean visibility
Although we have laid some of the groundwork, five Caribbean countries have no listed World Heritage sites listed They are the Bahamas, Grenada, Guyana, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago! Let’s troubleshoot and pave the way forward! Let’s do something about that before Artificial Intelligence begin rewriting us and perpetuating more false narratives that we have endured over the centuries! Make contact to explore how we may build on and advance these processes!
In other regions, countries without World Heritage listings are – yes you guessed it – mainly in the Global South – mainly in Asia-Pacific and African Regions, which, with Latin America and the Caribbean remain the most underrepresented. They are Bhutan, Brunei, Burundi, the Comoros, the Cook Islands, Djibouti, Equatorial Guinea, Eswatini, Kuwait, Liberia, Maldives, Monaco, Nauru, Niue, Samoa, São Tomé and Príncipe, Somalia, South Sudan, Timor-Leste, Tonga, and Tuvalu.

As you well know, I have been consistently trying to bridge these gaps, exploring, mapping, studying and retrieving our Heritage interconnections through multi-angles of Intangible and Tangible Cultural Heritage lenses while punching on the international systems to make them more relevant to our needs.
Here is a quick recap of some of the World Heritage Sites that I have visited which give me close and direct knowledge and insights into best and worst practices in heritage management, planning, mapping, sustainable tourism and just the pure enjoyment in being part of our incredible world heritage with yet under-explored potential of our interconnectedness.
My Footprints on World Heritage Sites
These are sites already inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage Lists that I have visited, not just as tourist, but as heritage expert, educator and research. My close knowledge and insights into these inform my engagement and analyses of nomination processes, heritage management, sustainable tourism, mapping outstanding universal value and other technicalities that challenge local communities.
The Caribbean
Antigua and Barbuda
- Antigua Naval Dockyard and Related Archaeological Sites, UNESCO World Heritage Site
Apart from participating in Antigua and Barbuda to enhance women in leadership and gender mainstreaming in decision making, and cultural engagements wit the Museum of Antigua and Barbuda, authors and Young Poets on LiTTribute to the Antilles, I was part of the exciting processes of preparing Antigua Naval Dockyard and related Archeological Sites for nomination

Barbados
Shared some thrilling moments with legendary Barbadian Author Austin Clarke and trained women for engendering our regional politics to fruition – hats of Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley! – but also in nomination processes for Historic Bridgetown and its Garrison from regional through global levels of UNESCO General Assembly processes!

Cuba and its Heritage Cities
What an amazing gamut Cuba has amassed. In the city where I trained as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage Facilitator and worked on Latin America and Caribbean nomination dossiers for World Heritage also extensively research tours to examine bests and worst practices, so some invisible footprints there on:
- Old Havana and its Fortification System
- Trinidad and the Valley de los Ingenios
- San Pedro de la Roca Castle, Santiago de Cuba
- Viñales Valley
- Archaeological Landscape of the First Coffee Plantations in the South-East of Cuba
- Alejandro de Humboldt National Park
- Urban Historic Centre of Cienfuegos
- Historic Centre of Camagüey

Dominican Republic
Smashing through language barriers, with warm troipical breezes washing over my face as it did that other Chris – Christopher Columbus – my ‘rediscoverie’ unearthing some interconnections hidden in plain site that can entirely change our Caribbean story beyond the indoctrinated colonial heritage routes and roots! Wait for it …

Jamaica Twice as Nice
Apart from morning hikes, boating and cruising through the majestic Jamaica landscapes, seascapes and rivers, also the more grit to the wheel, working on troubleshooting community and intergovernmental relations, nomination processes, education and sensitisation of policy and decision-makers, educators, NGOs and community custodians global to local levels. So my embrace of Jamaica includes not just celebrating our common Independence anniversaries, but also working with local to global communities of interests in nomination preparations for:

Saint Kitts and Nevis
Tiny but mighty this was one of our earliest heritage inscriptions and being there allowed me to not just explore but map heritage management and set the stage for advancing its strides for intangible cultural heritage.

Saint Lucia
A media interlude meshed with heritage steps and other regional engagements with heritage colleagues as we define its challenges on heritage management, a classic case of why the global mechanisms needs review on relevance to our regional realities …
Curacao & the Netherlands Antilles
Picture Postcardcity! So picturesque! Enjoyable engagement and exploration of integrating colonial experiences for appreciation of our layered and variegated Caribbean Heritage with scholarly input on other research dimensions of heritage as Memory of the World. Of course it is listed not among Caribbean but European inscriptions as it still maintains colonial ties as part of the Netherlands Antilles.

Brazil
This regional giant continues to awe! I weaved through various engagements to embrace th potential it offers to complete our heritage story – and overturn world history as we knowit! – Yet! It is coming! I glimpse the whole from the parts – holistic intertwining of various awareness raising and community consensus-building activities bringing together various UNESCO instruments and mechanisms that combine World Cultural Heritage, Intangible Cultural Heritage, Diversity of Cultural Expressions and mainstreaming women’s issues in development took me through these cultural landscapes:
- Historic Centre of Salvador de Bahia
- Brasilia
- Rio de Janeiro: Carioca Landscapes between the Mountain and the Sea
Excited to explore its more recent inscriptions (pssst Make Contact!)

Mexico
Tipping my sombrero! Mexico has added an exciting new site of not just World Heritage but also living heritage. Can’t wait to explore to expand our interconnected heritage along with my experiences of its other elements.
Colombia
The incisive processes of advancing democratic practices, freedom of expression and access to information in the Inter-American systems and gender mainstreaming in decision making took my through this World Heritage site – and then some…
Panama
- Fortifications on the Caribbean Side of Panama: Portobelo-San Lorenzo

United States of America

- La Fortaleza and San Juan National Historic Site in Puerto Rico
- Statue of Liberty
- Everglades National Park
Puerto Rico is in the Caribbean but in our complex geopolitical identifications ranks among the inscriptions of the USA so my close relationship with this island, its capital and other districts join other forays into the USA!
Can’t wait to fill in the gaps – A clearer picture now with my recent mappings from Odisha, through Allahabad and Maha Kumbh experiences, through Northern India and tracing ancestral footprints – beyond colonial to precolonial interconnections – what colonial and other turbulent history of conquests could not erase! It coming …

Early experience of these landscapes set the stage for a lifetime quest – how much more to add to this now!
Malaysia
So much more hidden in plain sight!
Singapore
Beautiful as only Singapore can, yet it is remains least of what this tiny island has to offer us in our heritage story…

Europe
Belgium
I have always felt that there can be no other name for this spot in Belgium’s capital city as La Grand-Place and there are many reason for it – not the least of which it is here that the European Union adapted my technique of multisectoral engagement to advance awareness building and engagements on food security and agriculture- yes! All our cultural streams, including the culture of agriculture, politics, business and technologies are interconnected too!
France
- Palace and Park of Versailles
- Cathedral of Notre-Dame, Former Abbey of Saint-Rémi and Palace of Tau, Reims
- Paris, Banks of the Seine
- Bordeaux, Port of the Moon
Go to France they told me, and I did! It is here that we consolidated the U40 network as a force for global change to give effect to the UNESCO Conventions on Diversity of Cultural Expressions – read the convention on creative industries, culture and trade. At the home quarters of UNESCO, France is where spent a lot time trying to finetune global policy and programme actions to be more relevant to our region! — Yes a whole mammoth task! And then there are our own local cultural influences from the French deeply embedded in our intangible cultural heritage!
Yes our complexions are a complex intertwining that makes these all the more exciting to map!

Greece
The gateway to European civilisation is necessary to cross-fertilise our understanding of ancient interconnections erased by colonisation so my early steps here were just to whet the appetite and open other doors…

Italy
The colossal Roman Empire which gave us words like colossal encompases an array of Italian sites, extending from the Vatican through the high walls and deep heritage trails …

- Historic Centre of Rome, the Properties of the Holy See in that City Enjoying Extraterritorial Rights and San Paolo Fuori le Mura*12
- Vatican City
Malta
An important intersection in the crossroads of global journeys, intersecting cultures and traditions that I was able to explore as part of the reach of the Commonwealth!

Netherlands (Kingdom of the)
- Dutch Water Defence Lines
- Historic Area of Willemstad, Inner City and Harbour, Curaçao

Reversing the trail of Christopher Columbus a tip of the iceberg that unleashed our interconnected colonial experiences with some remarkable insights ….
Switzerland
Nothing like the crisp fresh air of the Swiss Alps to add perspective to the natural interconnections we share, and touching the soil of the tiny district of Zug wth its quaint town inlaid into the mountains, so much in contrast to the bustling city, Geneva.
Turkey
Now here’s much more to delve into the confluence of Eastern and Western cultures that make for a heritage still shrouded in mystery.

- Canterbury Cathedral, St Augustine’s Abbey, and St Martin’s Church
These old colonial towns, archives and representatives of newer civilisations in the broad span of global development get contexts in the broad scheme of the march of our world civilisation and of course provides ample fodder for my satire and humour like the conversation between these two nonagenarians in a Commonwealth game of Queen and Mouse!

Africa
South Africa
South africa’s contribution to modern humanity is the triumph over apartheid and reconciliation and assertion of human rights but its natural history is also inspiring in so many ways.
Tunisia
This is only tip of the iceberg for this tripoint of contact of Asia Middle East at the tip of African Continent with its own multicultural milieu.
Uganda

Here to empower civil society with new media tools also saw me trekking on the equator line and these historic iconic huts of ancient times. Surviving wars and natural disasters, at the heart of the African continent, this exemplifies the spirit of Africa when there is so much more to be mad visible for reclaiming its central place in evolution of world civilisations.
Explored other sites and elements across Chile, Costa Rica, Canada, Venezuela, Norway
Belize, which already has to develop inscribed the Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System, and elsewhere.

Of course, while there are many more worlds to conquer and territories to explore, I am sure you would agree these all make for a solid basis for research comparison and carving an unprecedented path forward towards recognition of Our InterConnected Global Heritage.
